Agapius Amo

Agapius Amo was a two-time individual national champion for the Lion track team, taking the individual title in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 10,000-meters at the 1986 NCAA Outdoor Championship meet. He was named a First Team All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters in both 1985 and 1986, becoming one of the most decorated track athletes in program history. He helped the Lions to a runner-up finish at the 1985 NCAA Division II National Championship meet.

Amo set the school record in the 10,000-meters in his final race as a Lion and the record has stood for more than 30 years. In 1986, he was named the Lone Star Conference Cap Shelton Outstanding Male Track Athlete of the Year award as he won the LSC Championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase and both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races.

In 1984, Amo represented his home country of Tanzania in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He won a gold medal in Sweden, the 5000-meter run in Tanzania, won marathons in both Sweden and Yugoslavia and finished second in the 10,000-meter run at the World Championships in Canada.
